A TV above the fireplace makes sense. It saves space, creates a natural focal point, and looks stunning — when done correctly.
But fireplace TV installation comes with unique challenges: heat, height, and cable management. Ignore any of these, and you risk damaging your TV, straining your neck, or ruining the clean look.
This guide covers everything you need to know before mounting a TV over your fireplace — including when you should choose a different wall entirely.
Is Above the Fireplace a Good Location?
The short answer: Yes, with the right preparation.
The long answer: It depends on three factors:

If your fireplace fails any of these tests, consider an adjacent wall instead. A TV that’s safe but too high will cause daily frustration.
✅ Swift TV rule: We never mount a TV above a fireplace without measuring surface temperature first. Safety is not negotiable.
Heat Safety – How Much Clearance Does Your TV Need?
Heat is the #1 killer of TVs above fireplaces. Even if the wall feels cool, rising heat can damage internal components over time.
Minimum clearance guidelines:

Additional precautions:
Install a mantel to deflect rising heat (even a shallow shelf helps)
Use a heat shield between the fireplace and TV
Never mount directly above a wood-burning firebox without a mantel
⚠️ Warning: Most TV manuals specify a maximum ambient temperature of 95–105°F. Run your fireplace for 20 minutes and test the wall. If it’s too hot to hold your hand against for 10 seconds, don’t mount your TV there.
Choosing the Right Mount for Your Fireplace
Standard TV mounts work on drywall above a fireplace — but fireplace installations often need special mounts.
Mount options compared:

Pull-down mounts explained: These mounts attach to the wall above the mantel but include articulating arms that let you pull the TV down to seated eye level. When not in use, push it back up — it looks like a normal mounted TV.
✅ Swift TV tip: Pull-down mounts cost more ($150–300) and require stronger anchoring, but they completely solve the “TV too high” problem.
Hiding Wires on Brick, Stone, or Drywall
A beautiful fireplace TV installation is ruined by dangling cables. But hiding wires depends entirely on your wall material.
For brick and stone: There is no “inside the wall.” We use ultra-thin, paintable raceways that blend into mortar lines. From 5 feet away, you won’t see them.
Power considerations: You cannot run a standard power cord inside any wall (fire hazard). For drywall, we install a recessed power kit. For brick/stone, we use surface-mounted power outlets or cord covers rated for in-wall use.
✅ Swift TV guarantee: No visible wires — even on brick or stone. We have solutions for every surface.
Fireplace Materials – Brick, Stone, Tile, and Wood
Not all fireplaces mount the same way. Each material requires specific tools and techniques.
Brick: Drill into mortar (not the brick itself) using a masonry bit and hammer drill. Use sleeve anchors or tapcon screws.
Stone: More challenging — stone can crack. We drill slowly with diamond-tipped bits and use epoxy anchors for security.
Tile: Requires a tile bit to avoid cracking. We drill through the tile into the substrate behind it (drywall or cement board).
Wood (surround or mantel): Simplest material — treat like standard drywall mounting. Use lag bolts into studs.
Pro tip: Never assume there are studs behind brick or stone. In many homes, fireplace facades are attached to metal lath and mortar — no wood at all. We use specialized masonry anchors rated for 200+ lbs.
When NOT to Mount Above Your Fireplace
Sometimes the right answer is “don’t.”
Avoid fireplace TV installation if:
✅ The wall gets too hot to touch after 20 minutes of fire
✅ Your mantel is higher than 56 inches (TV center would exceed 65 inches)
✅ You have a wood-burning fireplace with no mantel
✅ There’s a better wall available at eye level
✅ You plan to use the fireplace daily for hours (heat damage accumulates)
What to do instead: Mount the TV on an adjacent wall, use a full-motion mount to angle it toward the seating area, and treat the fireplace as a separate focal point.
"I had my TV mounted today and everything went well. Andy arrived on time and explained a couple of options for where the TV could go. The installation looks clean and the cables look much better now."

A TV above your fireplace can look incredible — but only if heat, height, and cable management are handled professionally. The wrong mount, poor clearance, or visible wires will turn your dream setup into a daily annoyance.
Don’t guess. Get it done right.
